Type Locality and Naming

It was named by the Compiler

Jingeng Sha (coordinator) Group for the Regional Stratigraphic Chart of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in 1981. The naming section is located to the north of the Yangisar area of the Tulgeming region, Lutai County (ca. 41.8N, 84.2E), Xinjiang. Middle formation in Kelasu Gr.

Synonym: (阳霞组), Yangisar Fm


Lithology and Thickness

The formation is composed of grey-white and yellow-grey gritstones, grey-green siltstones, grey-black shales, carbonaceous mudstones and coal beds, with a thickness of about 200-400 m. Its basal part consists of sandstones with fluvial cross-beddings.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is in a conformable contact with the underlying Arhe Fm (= Ahe Fm)

Upper contact

It is in a conformable contact with the overlying Kyzylnur Fm (= Kezilenur Fm)

Regional extent

The particular formation is distributed in the Kuche-Baicheng area with an unitary lithology and a less changeable thickness. Better exposures of the particular formation are found in the Yangisar area of the Tulgeming region, Luntai County, Bositeng-Gancao Lake, Hantenggri Peak, Kapusilang and Kalasu River areas.

Fossils

It yields plant fossils such as Neocalamites carcinoides, N. carrerei, Ciniopteris hymenophylloides, Cladophlebis denticulate, Phoenicopsis cf. angustifolia, Podozamites lanceolatus, Taeniopteris sp., Pityophyllum nordenskioldi, Baiera longifolia and Ginkgoites sp., as well as bivalve fossils as represented by Ferganoconcha sibirica.
